Our dream – one day every child in Ghana will have access to a laptop
With the help of gracious donors, our dream is to introduce computers to all of the children at the school in Ghana. One day, we hope to give every student in the school access to a tablet loaded with educational materials to supplement and accelerate their education. Our goal is to start with student in Primary class 1 (first-grade equivalent), and then work our way up.
Since I had an upcoming visit to Ghana, I contacted the IT instructor to learn more about the kid’s current needs.
Well, the IT instructor at the school was honest, while he liked the idea of starting young with tablets; he surfaced today’s immediate challenge.
The practical way to help most of the kids right away was to buy a laptop so the older children can share and prepare for upcoming practical exams.
In his own words,
” We are very grateful for the initiative you have decided to embark upon. Honestly speaking, IT should start from the very beginning. That notwithstanding, it is at the higher classes that the practical aspect is greatly needed. This is so because they have the task of writing ICT in their BECE, which is mostly practically oriented. I think that if there is the possibility of providing a laptop for each child, which is quite welcoming, it should begin at the JHS level since they will be needing it most.”
So, we bought two laptops, installed educational software, and I am on my way, hand carrying them to these kids in Ghana.
Even if a couple dozen children go on to become a success and these 2 laptops played a part in their development, can we call it a big success?
One day we will have enough resources to help all of the children at this school, but for now let’s take it one step at a time.
